Gosatomnadzor presented the Review of the State of Radiation Safety in the Republic of Belarus for 2024

On April 22, the National Press Center hosted a press conference during which representatives of Gosatomnadzor presented the Review of the State of Radiation Safety in the Republic of Belarus for 2024.

Mr. Grigory Astashko, the Deputy Head of Gosatomnadzor, emphasized that keeping the general population informed about the state of nuclear and radiation safety has become a long-standing practice. He unveiled the pre-publication copy of the Review and explained its main content. In particular, he noted that the document covers the issues of the legislation development in the field of nuclear and radiation safety, physical protection of nuclear materials and ionizing radiation sources, licensing and permitting activities, scientific support, safety review, operation of nuclear facilities and a number of other areas related to nuclear and radiation field.

Mr. Vigen Marukhyan, the Head of the Division of Nuclear Safety Regulation, outlined safety regulation activities carried out at the Belarusian NPP in 2024 and described the system of state supervision in the field of nuclear and radiation safety, including the IAEA standards and recommendations. He underlined that no critical violations of the established norms and rules were detected in the course of supervisory activities in 2024.

Ms. Ekaterina Shmeleva, the Deputy Head of the Division of Radioactive Waste and Nuclear Legacy Facilities Management, gave an overview of the state of radiation safety within the territories affected by the Chernobyl NPP accident, including the Polessky State Radiation and Ecological Reserve, which is classified as a nuclear legacy facility. She also informed about the main directions of the state policy in the field of nuclear and radiation safety adopted by the Government.

Both journalists who attended the press conference and the audience connected via the Internet expressed great interest in the topic of the event.

The speakers answered all the questions related to radioactive waste management, as well as to the procedure for entering the territories where the access control was established.
